Short Biography: Dr. Wei Yao’s research interests have been focused on seeking novel treatment options for osteoporosis and other bone disorders. She is among the first to propose and implement a bone-targeted delivery of mesenchymal stem cells or bone active agents to enhance bone growth, to treat osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, fracture healing or other bone disorders. These research efforts are supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). One leading compound from such efforts has completed Phase I clinical trial in the US.  She has been collaborated with a number of pharmaceutical companies in drug development, including Eli Lilly, Pfizer, P & G, Glaxo and Smith Kline and Amgen.

Dr. Yao is one of researchers who has directed her efforts to study the sex differences in bone and joint diseases.  She received an award for “Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health” (BIRCWH) during her early training years, where she found an antagonist for Wnt signaling, sFRP1, attenuated PTH’s anabolic effects on bone.  She led the investigations in evaluating how the lack of progesterone receptor alerted peak bone mass, and the susceptibilities to the development of osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis.

In recent years, Dr. Yao was rewarded the most outstanding Research Award in UC Davis School of Medicine in 2012 and the most outstanding research team award from UC Davis Dean's Team Award in 2013, UC Davis Academic Federal Excellency in Research Award and Best Instructor Award from the Department of Internal Medicine and “Batterman of Mankind” award 2016.  Her work resulted in approximately 100 publications and were published in Nature Medicine, Nature Communication, Stem Cell, PNAS, JBMR, Bone, and Osteoporosis International, et al.  Her current H-index is 37.7 and her manuscripts have more than 3600 citations.

This webinar will be moderated by Dr. Mei Wan, Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
