Short Biography: Dr. Ling Qin is Professor and Director of Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology and director of a newly established Hong Kong – Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Research Institute of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Qin also holds joint professorship in Shenzhen Institutes of Advance Technology (SIAT) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and serves director of the Translational Medicine Research & Development Center in SIAT. Dr. Qin focuses on translation research in R&D of innovative biomaterials and drugs for prevention and treatment of challenging bone metabolic disorders and injuries. Dr. Qin published more than 300 SCI papers and 9 monographs, with an H index of 54. Dr. Qin is editor-in-chief of Journal of Orthopaedic Translation and fellow of several leading professional; societies, including AIMBE, ICORS, ASBMR, and IUSBSE.
Abstract: Dr. Qin’s multidisciplinary team investigate the potential healing mechanisms of biodegradable magnesium as orthopaedic implants for fracture repair. In an animal model, they showed for the first time that magnesium-induced osteogenesis or bone regeneration is mediated by local neuronal production of calcitonin gene-related peptide 1 (CGRP1), a calcium-lowering peptide. Apart from scientific research, Dr. Qin and his group build up concrete plans to follow ‘from bedside-to-bench-to-bedside’ approach to develop clinically applicable medical implants. This webinar will brief the design concepts and validation using large animal models, how to obtain official approvals for clinical trials, including a very first clinical trial to use magnesium screws for fixation in reconstructive hip surgeries. Such collective efforts from innovation to clinical translation also lead to enhanced university-industry collaboration and setting up spin-off companies for realization research serves clinical application. Lessons learnt from the R&D will also be shared that have also discussed in recently published review papers in Biomaterials and Sci Adv as well as summarized by Nature as “seeking biodegradable metals for clinical use”.
This webinar will be moderated by Dr. Ling Qin, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Pennsylvania.
