Professor Minghao Zheng, an academic pathologist, has been honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to orthopaedic research and regenerative medicine.

Born in Shantou, Guangdong Province, Professor Zheng graduated with a major in Pathology from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences. In 1988, he moved to Western Australia as a visiting scholar and later pursued advanced studies at The University of Western Australia (UWA), where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree (1994) and a Doctor of Medicine (Clinical) degree (2000). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of the United Kingdom. In 2025, he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

Currently, Professor Zheng serves as Professor of Orthopaedic Research at UWA. He has held positions including Associate Dean (International) at UWA's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Cheung Kong Lecturing Professor at Zhejiang University, and Deputy Director of the Australia-China Cooperative Research Centre for Biotherapy and Regenerative Medicine at Zhejiang University.

Additionally, he is head of Bone and Brain Axis Research at the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science and co-founder of Australian biotechnology companies Orthocell and Marine Biomedical. He has published over 300 scientific papers and holds over ten patents related to biological devices and cell therapy products across Australia, the United States, Japan, Singapore, Europe and China.

Professor Zheng advocates the philosophy of "utilizing materials bestowed by nature, learning from the process of natural tissue healing, and designing devices for tissue repair". He promotes the use of "natural scaffolds" such as collagen scaffolds or biomineralized composites to repair damaged tissues, pioneering the development of naturally derived biomaterials and biological therapies for treating trauma to nerves, cartilage, tendons and bones.

In 2015, he invented Remplir^{^TM}, a nerve repair device featuring a collagen membrane structure that mimics the epineurium. Approved in multiple countries since 2022, the innovation has now been used in over 6,000 cases globally. Another notable invention co-created by Professor Zheng is PearlBone^{^TM}, an artificial bone substitute material made from pearl oyster shells sourced from Broome, Western Australia, designed to improve outcomes in orthopaedic, trauma and reconstructive surgery applications.

His recent work on the impact of bone aging in brain function has shown that evidence-based lifestyle strategies for bone health may be beneficial for improving cognitive function.

Professor Zheng stated that his appointment to the Order of Australia is the greatest honour of his life.

"This award is overwhelming to me as I have travelled a long way to get to where I am today," Professor Zheng said.

"I’m honoured, but the credit belongs to the collective efforts of my students, colleagues, collaborators, partners and mentors. This recognition is also a testament to the dedication and passion of the teams at UWA, Orthocell, Marine Biomedical and the Perron Institute."

The 6th International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC-2026) will be held in Jinjiang, China, from June 25–28, 2026. We are pleased to announce that abstract submissions for ICMRC-2026 will be open from February 1 to March 15, 2026.

Please ensure that you refer to the abstract guidelines when preparing your submission. Abstracts that do not meet the requirements will not be considered. Abstracts received by the deadline will be reviewed for podium or poster presentation, and all presenting authors will be notified by April 15, 2026.

Presenting authors who meet the eligibility criteria below will be considered for the following two awards:

1. Rising Star Awards

Eligibility requirements: 1) Applicants must be a valid ICMRS member (membership registration: https://www.icmrs.net/join-us) and must have registered for the conference.

2) Applicants must be junior PIs who completed their terminal research degree or post-graduate clinical training (whichever is later) within the past 10 years.

3) Applicants must have operated an independent lab for no more than 6 years at the time of application.

4) Abstracts must present work originating from the applicant’s own independent lab.

5) After submitting the abstract and receiving the abstract ID, applicants must email two representative publications from their lab to ICMRS@icmrs.net, with the email subject formatted as: “Abstract ID + RSA”.

2. Young Investigator Awards

Eligibility requirements: 1) Applicants must be a valid ICMRS member (membership registration: https://www.icmrs.net/join-us) and must have registered for the conference.

2) Applicants must be graduate students, postgraduate trainees, postdoctoral fellows, or clinical residents with less than 5 years after obtaining the highest degree.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC) is a biennial international meeting in orthopaedic research organized by the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS). The 6th ICMRC (ICMRC-2026) will be held in Jinjiang, Fujian Province, China, from June 25 to June 28, 2026. The conference will be jointly organized by ICMRS, the National Center for Orthopaedic Medicine at Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Jinjiang Hospital (Fujian Branch of Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital). The conference will be co-chaired by Professor Wentian Yang, President of ICMRS and Professor at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and Professor Changqing Zhang from the National Center for Orthopaedic Medicine at Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital. The conference theme is “From Fundamental Discovery to Clinical Impact in Musculoskeletal Medicine.”

With the continued deepening of medicine–engineering integration in orthopaedics, close interaction between basic research and clinical practice—from molecular mechanisms and biomaterials development to precision diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation—has become a key driver of progress in the field. In this context, the conference will bring together leading international experts to present breakthrough advances in musculoskeletal research and to discuss critical pathways and practical experiences in translating fundamental discoveries into clinical applications, with the goal of improving patient care. The program will include keynote lectures, plenary and thematic sessions, and frontier forums, as well as oral and poster presentations, providing a dynamic platform for academic exchange and collaboration among researchers from China and abroad. To encourage innovation, the conference will also present Rising Star Awards and Young Investigator Awards, recognizing excellence and emerging talent in orthopaedic research. Dr. Minghao Zheng, Past ICMRS President, Elected as 2025 AAHMS Fellow

Professor Minghao Zheng, a past president of the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) and a world-renowned leader in orthopaedic research, has been elected as a 2025 Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS).

This prestigious appointment is one of Australia's highest honors in the health and medical sciences, recognizing Professor Zheng's outstanding contributions and exceptional leadership in translating scientific discoveries into clinical practice.

Professor Zheng serves as the Winthrop Professor of Orthopaedic Research at the University of Western Australia and leads the Bone and Brain Axis Research division at the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science. He is also the co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Orthocell.

His election to the AAHMS celebrates a distinguished career dedicated to regenerative medicine. Professor Zheng is globally recognized for pioneering innovative therapies for musculoskeletal injuries. His discoveries have led to new medical devices and cell-based products to repair cartilage, bone, and nerve injuries. His research has transformed understanding of musculoskeletal disease by revealing that giant cells in bone tumours are non-tumour cells (enabling non-surgical treatment), identifying obesity-linked pathological changes in osteoarthritis, and uncovering mitochondrial transfer as a key process for tissue homeostasis. His innovations have improved treatment outcomes for patients in Australia, the United States, and Europe.

The ICMRS community and his colleagues worldwide extend their warmest congratulations to Professor Zheng on this well-deserved honor, which underscores his profound impact on regenerative medicine and patient care.

ICMRS members are in the spotlight at the 12th International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies (ICORS) Congress

The 2025 Membership Meeting of the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) Australia and ASEAN Development Committee took place in Adelaide, Australia, on October 8, 2025. Prof. Jiake Xu, the committee chair, welcomed attendees, including ICMRS lifetime members: Prof. Ling Qin, Prof. Gang Li, Prof. Ye Ding, Prof. Yin Xiao, A/Prof. Jie Shen, A/Prof. Sien Lin, and Dr. Jiaojiao Li, alongside junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students. During the meeting, former ICMRS President Prof. Ling Qin delivered an engaging introduction about ICMRS and highlighted its collaboration with the Chinese Orthopaedic Research Society (CORS) and ICORS. A/Prof. Jie Shen also shared insights from his distinguished scientific career, discussing his achievements and experiences with ICMRS. Many members presented the latest progress in their research and career efforts within the field. We are grateful to Professor Rockey Tuan, former president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who served as our guest speaker and shared his remarkable journey as a leading scientist in the musculoskeletal field and as the president of a prestigious university. Additionally, we appreciate the contributions and hospitality of Prof. Yin Xiao and Prof. Minghao Zheng, who made this meeting a success.

Fascinatingly, at the 2025 World Congress of ICORS, ICMRS, a founding member of ICORS, organized two workshops: "Advancing the Frontiers: Cartilage Degeneration and Regeneration," led by A/Prof. Jie Shen from Washington University in St Louis, featuring invited speakers are Prof. Di Chen, Prof. Jiake Xu, and Prof. Yi-Xian Qin. The second workshop, titled "Insight into Cell Therapies for Revitalization of Skeletal Tissue: Evidence and Mechanism," was organized by Prof. Minghao Zheng from the University of Western Australia, with invited speakers Prof. Stuart Goodman, Prof. Rui Ruan, and Prof. Minghao Zheng. Attendees received all the talks well.

Highlighting our members' contributions, Prof. Ling Qin from the Chinese University of Hong Kong delivered a keynote speech on "Biomaterials for Orthopaedic Applications: Clinical Needs Lead the Way to Innovation and Clinical Translation." The 2nd Oxford–ICMRS Forum was successfully held at Keble College, Oxford, 17–20 August 2025

The 2nd Oxford–ICMRS Forum, held at Keble College, University of Oxford, from 17 to 20 August 2025, convened around 80 distinguished participants from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Russia. Under the theme Translational Medicine in Musculoskeletal Disorders, the forum provided an exceptional platform to connect basic discoveries with clinical innovation in musculoskeletal health.

The meeting opened with a welcome by Prof. Guozhi Xiao (Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen), President of ICMRS, who emphasised the Society’s mission to foster international collaboration and nurture the next generation of researchers. A highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of Honorary Fellowships to two of Oxford’s most eminent scholars: Prof. Graham Russell, celebrated as the “father of bisphosphonates” whose research revolutionised osteoporosis care, and Prof. Denis Noble, a pioneer in systems biology and cardiac modelling. Both were honoured for their groundbreaking achievements and contributions to society.

The scientific programme was rich and wide-ranging. Prof. Robert J. Pignolo (Mayo Clinic, USA) addressed aging, longevity, and bone health, while Prof. Graham Russell delivered a keynote on “Bisphosphonates: Bone and Beyond”. The meeting closed with an inspiring plenary lecture by Prof. Denis Noble, “Born of Water, Made in Silicon: Are We So Different in Intelligence?”, which wove together physiology, philosophy, and artificial intelligence to leave a lasting impression on the audience.

Chinese scholars contributed prominently, including Prof. Chentie Wu, who presented advances in musculoskeletal biology and regenerative approaches. In addition, many young professors from China were invited to speak, reflecting the dynamism of China’s academic community and the strong global reach of ICMRS.

The forum was enriched by the presence of leading journals Bone Research and Biomaterials Translational, which brought editorial perspectives to the discussions, as well as five industry delegations from the UK, Finland, and China, highlighting the growing importance of academia–industry partnerships in translational medicine.

Oxford’s historic environment provided an inspiring backdrop. Keble College, with its outstanding facilities, was an exceptional venue. The magical dining hall, often likened to scenes from Harry Potter, created an unforgettable atmosphere for the conference dinner. Participants also enjoyed punting on the Cherwell River and a guided tour of the legacy of Sir William Osler, widely recognised as the father of modern clinical medicine, whose home and medical collections remain cornerstones of Oxford’s medical heritage.

Another highlight was the after-dinner speech by Prof. Zhanfeng Cui, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, who reflected on innovation, translational medicine, and the crucial role of engineering in healthcare. Finally, Dr. Zhidao Xia, Chair of the Local Organising Committee, expressed gratitude to ICMRS, the distinguished speakers, the journals and industry representatives, and the many volunteers whose contributions ensured the event’s success.

The 2nd Oxford–ICMRS Forum was a resounding success. With 80 participants from across the globe, it honoured pioneers as well as the energy of young Chinese academics. With strong academic, clinical, and industry engagement, the forum advanced musculoskeletal research and reinforced Oxford’s standing as a global hub for translational medicine.

ICMRS members presented at the ORS 2025 conference

A significant number of ICMRS members recently participated in the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Conference 2025, held in Phoenix from February 6 to February 12, 2025. Our members were not only attendees but also played active roles in organizing the conference through workshops, sessions, and Research Interest Groups (RIGs).

Several of our distinguished members presented their groundbreaking research on musculoskeletal biomechanics, regenerative medicine, and novel therapeutic approaches for joint and bone disorders. Their contributions were met with great enthusiasm and sparked meaningful discussions.

ICMRS representatives engaged in valuable networking sessions with international researchers, fostering new collaborations to address the most pressing challenges in musculoskeletal science.

ICMRS leaders also gathered and discussed various matters related to the society's development, including strategies for new member recruitment, collaborations with other societies, and strengthening connections among members.

We would like to thank all those who represented ICMRS at the ORS Conference and extend our gratitude to everyone who attended and supported the society’s mission.

ICMRS 2024 membership meeting was successfully held

The ICMRS 2024 membership meeting was successfully held virtually on October 19 (Beijing time), with around 400 members joining the event.

President-elect Dr. Wentian Yang hosted the meeting, welcoming all attendees and delivering opening remarks. He briefly introduced the society and highlighted the importance of membership meetings for society's development. He specifically encouraged non-member attendees to join the society to maximize their membership benefits.

Next, ICMRS President Dr. Guozhi Xiao summarized the key achievements of the society over the past year. Notably, the society successfully hosted the ICMRC 2024 conference in Jinjiang, the first ICMRC after 2019. Dr. Xiao addressed the current membership situation and highlighted the importance of establishing closer interactions with sister societies to promote ICMRS international development. He also encouraged ICMRS members to participate actively in society activities and maintain high standards and academic integrity in musculoskeletal research. At the end of his presentation, Dr. Xiao announced the 2024 awardees of ICMRS distinguished awards.

ICMRS BOD Director Dr. Jean Jiang then briefly introduced the amendments to the ICMRS bylaws, which were passed unanimously by the attended members.

Afterward, Dr. Lidan You from Queen's University announced the Webster Jee Young Investigator Award winners and moderated the awardees' presentations. This year, the awards went to Jianguo Tao from the Zhejiang University – Westlake University Joint Training Program, Meagan Makarczyk from the University of Pittsburgh, and Hang Zhou from the Southern University of Science and Technology in China. They each delivered a 5-minute talk summarizing their outstanding work, followed by a brief discussion.

This year's keynote speeches were given by two world-renowned scientists, Dr. Matt Greenblatt from Cornell University and Dr. Fanxin Long from the University of Pennsylvania. They shared the latest skeletal stem cell biology findings and bone glucose metabolism research, respectively.

The meeting concluded with a reflection on ICMRS's 30th anniversary. ICMRS lifetime members and former leaders, Drs. Hong Zhou, Yi-Xian Qin, and David Ke, shared their emotional memories about the society's development since it was founded in 1993. They highlighted some important milestones, such as collaborations, leadership changes, revisions to the constitution, and name evolution, and offered their perspective on ICMRS's future.

ICMRS Hosts Memorable Dinner Event at 2024 ASBMR Annual Conference

On September 27, 2024, members of the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) gathered for a special dinner at Lee Chen Bistro in Toronto during the 2024 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Annual Conference. The event brought together 63 esteemed professors and students from across the globe, including the United States, Canada, Europe, and China, to celebrate scientific achievements and nurture long-standing friendships.

The two-hour event was filled with energy and excitement, as attendees exchanged stories about their research breakthroughs and reflected on the shared passion for advancing science. Lively conversations flowed, with participants eager to discuss the progress of their work and the collaborative spirit that has defined the ICMRS community.

Among the notable attendees were key leaders of ICMRS, including Jean Jiang, Wentian Yang, Yixian Qin, and Hang Lin. Joining them were some of the top elite scientists in the field, such as Weibo Xia, Yinzi Yang, Xu Cao, David Ke and Fanxing Long, whose presence added a special touch to the evening.

In addition to these distinguished figures, the event also welcomed a new generation of young students who showed great enthusiasm for ICMRS and its mission. These students, eager to engage with the society’s members, expressed their interest in contributing to the ongoing scientific exploration that defines ICMRS.

The dinner was not only an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of seasoned researchers but also a platform for fostering the future of musculoskeletal research. The blend of experience and new talent created an atmosphere of mutual respect and inspiration, ensuring that the ICMRS remains at the forefront of global scientific discovery.

As the evening drew to a close, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose, excited for the future of their research and the lasting connections that ICMRS continues to foster within the global scientific community.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS), joined by the National Centre of Orthopaedics at Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, HEMIN Foundation, and Fujian Jinjiang People's Hospital, successfully held the 5^th International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC-2024) in Jinjiang, China from May 31 to June 3, 2024. This conference was chaired by ICMRS president Prof. Guozhi Xiao and co-chaired by Profs. Changqing Zhang, Jean Jiang, Changsheng Liu, Xing Ma, and Ming Chen. The conference focused on the theme, "Embracing Cutting-edge Cell and Molecular Biotechnologies and Material Sciences to Advance Basic and Translational Orthopedic Research." Nearly 1000 delegates from all over the world participated in this event, providing an excellent platform for thought-provoking discussions, innovative ideas, and collaborative efforts to advance orthopaedic research.

In their opening remarks, the conference chairs, Profs. Guozhi Xiao and Changqing Zhang, extended a heartfelt welcome to esteemed experts from across the globe, acknowledging their longstanding support for ICMRS, and a sincere appreciation to the distinguished guests, sponsors, and members of the scientific and organizing committees for their invaluable support. They also highlighted the potential impact of the conference on advancing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of skeletal disorders and on future orthopaedic research locally and nationally. On behalf of ICMRS, Prof. Guozhi Xiao overviewed the society’s rich history and current standing, delving into the significance of previous ICMRCs.

The conference received about 600 abstracts. More than 110 invited speakers and distinguished scholars delivered speeches at the ICMRC-2024, including Profs. Changsheng Liu at Shanghai University, Tamara Alliston at the University of California San Francisco, Cao Xu at Johns Hopkins University, Eben Alsberg at the University of Illinois Chicago, Changqing Zhang at the Sixth People's Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Regis J. Okeefe at Washington University, Chuanju Liu at Yale University, Edward Guo at Columbia University, David Ke at Angitia Biopharmaceuticals, and Ling Qin at the University of Pennsylvania.

During the three-day conference, participants engaged in a wide range of concurrent sessions and symposiums. The conference comprised three basic science venues and one clinical venue, covering a variety of hot topics, including musculoskeletal development and aging, joint biology and osteoarthritis, mechanobiology and biomechanics, bone metabolism and osteoporosis, nerve regulation of bone, joint disorders and pain, bone tumor, intervertebral disc and spine degeneration, tendon and ligaments, muscle, biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and drug development and clinical applications.

At the closing ceremony, one President's Award (to Tailin He), 28 Young Investigator Awards, and 58 Travel Awards were given to the conference attendees to recognize the excellent scientific merit of their poster and podium presentations (see the appendix for the awardee list).

ICMRC-2024 concludes another successful orthopaedic research event hosted by ICMRS, following the previous ICMRCs held in Suzhou (2013), Changsha (2015), Shihezi (2017), and Shenzhen (2019). 2024.02.03 ICMRS Dinner Event in Long Beach Unites Members from Across the Globe

On February 3rd, the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) hosted a vibrant dinner event at George's Greek Cafe in Long Beach, California. Attended by 52 enthusiastic members, including honorary, lifetime, regular, and student members, the evening served as a platform for camaraderie and networking.

Members from various corners of the globe, including the United States, China, and Canada, gathered at the event, exuding joy as they reunited with old acquaintances and forged new connections within the musculoskeletal research community.

The lively atmosphere of George's Greek Cafe provided the perfect backdrop for attendees to engage in stimulating conversations, exchange ideas, and share experiences in the field of musculoskeletal research. Laughter echoed throughout the venue as guests bonded over their shared passion for advancing orthopedic science.

"This dinner event is not only a chance to catch up with colleagues but also an opportunity to foster collaboration and innovation in our field," remarked one attendee, reflecting the sentiment shared by many.

As plates were cleared and conversation continues, it was evident that the ICMRS dinner event had successfully achieved its goal of bringing together like-minded individuals dedicated to advancing musculoskeletal research worldwide.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC) is a biennial international academic conference organized by the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS). The ICMRC aims to promote basic and translational orthopedic research and to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and comprehensive prevention of major musculoskeletal diseases through academic dialogue, research collaboration among domestic and foreign colleagues, and ICMRS collaborative centers. Following the success of previous ICMRCs in Suzhou, Changsha, Shihezi, and Shenzheng, the 5^th ICMRC (ICMRC-2024) will be held in Jinjiang, a historic yet vibrant city in southern China, from May 31 to June 3, 2024. ICMRS, the National Orthopaedic Research Centre at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Sixth People’s Hospital, and Fujian Jinjiang People’s Hospital will jointly host this conference.

The ICMRC-2024 will be chaired by ICMRS president Professor Guozhi Xiao, and Professors Changqing Zhang, Jean Jiang, and Ming Chen. The theme of this meeting is “Embracing Cutting-edge Cell and Molecular Biotechnologies and Material Sciences to Advance Basic and Translational Orthopedic Research.” The conference will cover topics including bone metabolism, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, disc and vertebrate degeneration, musculoskeletal development and degeneration, tendon and ligament biology, stem cell and tissue engineering, biomaterials, biomechanics, bone tumor and the application of new technologies in the orthopedic field. Abstract submission will open on January 1 and close on February 15, 2024, USA Eastern time. Leading scientists from the United States, Canada, Australia, European countries, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China will be invited to share their exciting findings and insights. This conference will feature exciting programs, including presentations, symposia, and best abstract and young investigator awards, to facilitate the discussion of state-of-the-art musculoskeletal research and clinical applications.

International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) is pleased to announce the first inaugural scientific awards to our members who have made outstanding contributions to their scientific and professional career in musculoskeletal science and medicine.

2023 Lifetime Achievement Award

The ICMRS Lifetime Achievement Award is to honor a scholar who has devoted much of his/her career to the advancement in musculoskeletal science and medicine. Throughout their career the awardee has demonstrated the scientific excellence in research and innovation and provided mentorship and in their leadership, service, education, and professional relationships. This prestigious award honors an individual who is a basic researcher and/or clinician in the field of musculoskeletal medicine.

Prof. Kerong Dai, MD, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine

The ICMRS Lifetime Achievement Award has been honored to Prof. Dai Kerong Dai, MD, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, who has made substantial contributions in the areas of medical application of Orthopedic Biomechanics, 3D Bioprinting, Stem Cell Engineering, Arthroplasty, and Osteoporosis. He has published more than 500 papers as first author and co-author and books as editor-in-chief or contributor, and also have been honored with 45 prizes including Chinese National Invention Prize, National Science and Technology Prize, etc. He is the chief scientist of Shanghai Medical 3D Printing Innovation Research Center. He and his team have carried out a series of basic and clinical research on stem cell technology to promote bone regeneration and participated in the invention and translation of related research into clinical application (NMPA 20213101079). The 3D printing center also witness the China first registration certificate for 3D printed personalized artificial bone joint prosthesis (NMPA 3050065: 2003) and the world’s first 3D printed bioactive bone grafts for clinical application.

2023 Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award

The Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award is awarded to a clinical scientist making outstanding contributions to the field of clinical management of musculoskeletal diseases including surgical management and therapeutics, epidemiology and health-services research and clinical outcomes. The awardees should be established Investigators who are at the full professor level. This research should have been conducted within the last five years.

Prof. Qing Jiang, MD, PhD, at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University

The Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award has been honored to Professor Qing Jiang, MD, PhD, at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University, who is Orthopedic consultant who has been practicing medicine for 34 years and performed more than 20,000 surgeries and treated more than 100,000 patients. He had been engaged in orthopedic and sports medicine clinical and basic research since 1989. Prof. Jiang Mainly engaged in the basic and clinical research of sports system diseases, and published 243 Chinese core articles, 289 SCI articles, included Nature Medicine, Nature Genetic, Nature Communications, Cell Metabolism, PNAS, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, Science Translational Medicine, Advanced Materials, ACS NANO etc. Prof. Jiang is the editorial board member of several SCI magazines, include BMC musculoskeletal disorders, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage and Orthopedic Surgery, and created an English magazine Annals of Joint as the chief editor. He led the preparation of the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis, and also participated in the preparation of several domestic orthopedics guides and was invited to give lessons in Australia and Japan for many times.

2023 Distinguished Translational Research Investigator Award

The Distinguished Translational Research Investigator Award is awarded to a scientist and/or clinician who has made outstanding contributions and impact to the field of musculoskeletal research by translating a research concept or idea into clinical application. The awardees should be established Investigators who are at the full professor level. Considering the length of research translation from concept to product approval or clinical trial normally takes a long time, there will be no limit on when the research is conducted.

Dr Hua Zhu (David) Ke, Founder and CEO, Angitia Biopharmaceuticals

The Distinguished Translational Research Investigator Award has been honored to Dr Hua Zhu (David) Ke, Founder and CEO, Angitia Biopharmaceuticals, who has dedicated all his efforts on the discovery and development of innovative drugs for treatment of serious musculoskeletal diseases for the last 30 years. Before founding Angitia in 2018, David served as Vice President and the Head of Bone Therapeutic Area in UCB Pharma in the United Kingdom, and Scientific Executive Director and Head of Bone Research in Amgen Inc. in the United States, and Research Fellow and Head of Bone Pharmacology in Pfizer Central Research and Development in the United States. As one of the major contributors, David led his teams to the successful discover and development of blockbuster innovative drugs for treatment of serious bone diseases that have been launched in United States, Europe, Japan, China, and other parts of the world. These innovative drugs included Prolia (osteoporosis), Xgeva (bone metastases) and Evenity (osteoporosis).

2023 Distinguished Basic Research Investigator Award

The Distinguished Clinical Research Investigator is awarded to a basic scientist who has made outstanding contributions to the field of musculoskeletal research in all areas of basic science including biology, bioengineering and biomaterials. The awardees should be established. Investigators who are at the full professor level. This research should have been conducted within the last five years.

Prof. Xu Cao, PhD at Johns Hopkins University

The Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award has been honored to Professor Xu Cao, PhD at Johns Hopkins University, who has strived to discover the fundamental mechanisms of bone biology to gain a deeper understanding of major musculoskeletal disorders and develop potential therapies for these bone diseases. We have revealed the coupling mechanism of bone remodeling in the maintenance of bone homeostasis, in which TGF-β activated by osteoclasts induces migration of mesenchymal stem cells to bone resorptive sites for bone formation. The recruited mesenchymal stem cells then undergo differentiation for bone formation. The coupled bone remodeling by TGF-β is associated with angiogenesis. Alterations in the coupling process in bone remodeling leads to many skeletal diseases. Our research in those fields has been published in Cell Stem Cell, Nat Med., Nat Commun., J Clin Invest. etc. We have organized and planned several clinical trials to investigate topics such as stem cell recruitment in anabolic versus antiresorptive osteoporosis therapy. We have also screened and synthesized a series of small molecules for osteoarthritis and spine disc degeneration. Our goal is to create effective disease-modifying therapies to treat osteoarthritis, spine disc generation, and other major skeletal diseases.

2023 FALL ICMRS MEMBERSHIP MEETING NEWSLETTER

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) convened its 2023 Fall Membership Meeting virtually on October 8, 2023, led by Dr. Wentian Yang, Chair of the ICMRS Program Committee and faculty member at Brown University Alpert Medical School. Dr. Yang initiated the session with a warm welcome to the ICMRS community.

To commence, Professor Minghao Zheng, the immediate past president of ICMRS and a faculty member at the University of Western Australia, provided a brief overview of the society's achievements over the past two years. Under his leadership, ICMRS witnessed steady growth in revenue and membership, now boasting 685 members and 41 collaborative centers worldwide. New award categories were established to honor members' academic and leadership accomplishments, and the ICMRS-Oxford translation meeting in musculoskeletal research was successfully organized. Professor Zheng also outlined future challenges for ICMRS.

Following this, Dr. Guozhi Xiao, the newly elected President of ICMRS and a professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUST), delivered his inaugural speech. Dr. Xiao shared his aspirations for the community and articulated his vision for ICMRS in the coming years. He introduced his leadership team and committee chairs.

The event proceeded with the traditional Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards ceremony and keynote seminars. Professor Jerry Feng from Texas A&M announced the award winners, each of whom—Han Jiao (Hebei Medical University), Jiekang Wang (Johns Hopkins University), Jingruo Zhang (University of Texas Health Science Center), Tailin He (Southern University of Science and Technology), and Hao Zhou (Zhejiang University School of Medicine)—delivered brief presentations on their award-winning discoveries. They each received a $500 prize and a plaque. Professor Mone Zaidi from Icahn Sinai School of Medicine in New York presented a captivating lecture on "Pituitary Crosstalk Between Bone, Body Fat, and Brain." Additionally, Professor Veronique Lefebvre from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania shared recent findings on "SOXC Are Critical Regulators of Adult Bone Mass."

The Fall ICMRS membership meeting also featured updates from three editors, Professors Hui Yang, Yixian Qin, and Gang Li, who discussed the three ICMRS-sponsored journals: Bone Research, Mechanobiology in Medicine, and Journal of Orthopedic Translation.

The meeting achieved great success with over 326 attendees, including ICMRS members and non-member guests worldwide.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) will virtually launch the 2023 Fall Membership Meeting on October 8^th (Beijing Time). This meeting provides a platform for ICMRS members to exchange information on all frontiers of musculoskeletal research and integrate knowledge from diverse research specialties. In an endeavor to enrich the discussion, we will host two keynote talks presented by internationally renowned scientists. In addition, we will also present the Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards to recognize the academic achievements of young ICMRS members. The award recipients will be announced during the membership meeting. Each awardee will receive a certificate/plaque, an honorarium of 500 USD, and is required to give a short presentation about their work online. The 2023 Fall ICMRS Membership Meeting program will be announced soon.

NEWS REPORT OF 2023 ICMRS SPRING MEMBERSHIP ZOOM MEETING

The annual ICMRS Membership Zoom Meeting was held online on Feburary 25, 2023. Professor Guozhi Xiao, the Program Committee Chair and President-Elect of ICMRS from Southern University of Science and Technology organized and presided over the meeting. Dr. Minghao Zheng, ICMRS president and professor of the University of Western Australia gave a brief summary on the current state of ICMRS and the society’s progresses during the last year under his leadership.

As a tradition, the membership meeting was highlighted by the Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards session. This year’s winners are Drs. Yuantao Zhang (The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Mingyue Fan (Drexel University), Jiawei Lu (University of Pennsylvania), Yiyang Ma (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Donghao Gan (Southern University of Science and Technology) and Bryan Kwok (Drexel University). A cash prize of $500 and an award plaque will be given to each awardee shortly after the meeting.

This year’s membership meeting has invited two keynote speakers. Dr. Richard Oreffo, Professor in Musculoskeletal Science from the University of Southampton presented a highly exciting talk entitled “New approaches to skeletal cell-based bone regeneration from bench to clinic”. Dr. Ling Qin, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, the University of Pennsylvania, presented her recent scientific findings entitled “Single-cell profiling of skeletal progenitors”.

This meeting has achieved a great success with about 300 ICMRS members and guests attended the meeting. （by Dr. Guozhi Xiao）

2023 New Year Greetings

Dear members of ICMRS,

2022 has been a remarkable year for ICMRS. We would like to begin this note by saying the global musculoskeletal research could not have made such significant progress without the hard work from you.

Since our inception, ICMRS has had a clear mission to advance the global musculoskeletal research agenda through excellence in education, research collaboration, and networking. A look back at 2022, our members have made outstanding contribution to the research of musculoskeletal research from different continents in the world. Notably, a remarkable study (Chen et al) published in Nature led by Professors Shunwu Fan and Xianfeng Lin from our ICMRS centre at the Sun Run-Run Shown Hospital at Zhejiang University, which made an international news headline. The team has done crossing species transfer of plant derived sacs known as thylakoids into animal and human cells. Delivering chondrocyte membrane coated nano-thylakoids into the osteoarthritic mouse knee joints slowed down cartilage degeneration after light activation. The team reported for the first time, scientists can use light to synthesis ATP in human and animal cells and cure disease.

During 2022, ICMRSI has improved the financial situation significantly. We have increased our revenue by over $66k. We have now established new research awards including a) Lifetime Achievement Award, b) Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award, c) Distinguished Translational Research Investigator Award, d) Distinguished Basic Science Research Investigator Award. E) ICMRS Service Medals. Announcement for call of award nomination has been made by the nomination committee in December for the deadline in April 2023. Our membership has increased 11.5% to 709 members. ICMRS had European chapter at the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Society meeting in Edinburgh and Asia-Pacific Chapter in Australia this year. Two more collaborative centres were established this year, reaching a total of 38 collaborative centres in China. In August 2023, we will have ICMRS centre retreats at Oxford, UK during the meeting of ICMRS Translational medicine in MSK diseases. We have given over 20 online lectures this year with focus of promoting young investigators. ICMRS wechat public media has attracted more than 4000 followers internationally. With the great influence an impact on MSK research by our society, we will organise the International MSK submit 2023 in Broome, Australia on July 2023. Our society official journals Bone Research and Journal of Orthopaedic Translation continue to lead musculoskeletal research.

NEWS REPORT OF 2022 ICMRS-ASBMR MEMBERSHIP ZOOM MEETING

The annual ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Zoom Meeting was held online on September 24, 2022. Professor Guozhi Xiao, the Program Committee Chair and President-Elect of ICMRS from Southern University of Science and Technology organized and presided over the meeting. He started by welcoming all ICMRS members, distinguished professors, and non-member guests to attend the meeting.

Dr. Minghao Zheng, ICMRS president and professor of the University of Western Australia gave a summary report on the current state of ICMRS and the society’s progresses in the last year under his leadership. Thanks to the hard work of the ICMRS Executive Committee, his team has achieved the initially set goals, including the increase of revenue and establishment of new research awards, expansion of ICMRS membership (709 members) and collaborative centers (38 centers), and growing impact of ICMRS WeChat public media (more than 4000 followers).

As a tradition, the membership meeting was highlighted by the Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards session. This year’s winners are Peng Liao from Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital, Mingjue Chen from Southern University of Science and Technology, Delin Liu from The University of Western Australia, Jun Sun from Weill Cornell Medicine, and Baohong Shi from Xiamen University. A cash prize of $500 and an award plaque will be given to each awardee shortly after the meeting.

This year’s membership meeting has invited two keynote speakers. Dr. Natalie A. Sims from St. Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research and The University of Melbourne provided a highly fascinating presentation entitled “Using mouse models to understand cortical bone development and degeneration”. Dr. Qing Jiang, the Director and Professor of the center of Diagnosis and Treatment for Joint Disease, Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to Medical School of Nanjing University, presented recent scientific findings from his laboratory titled “Defects in a liver-bone axis contribute to hepatic osteodystrophy disease progression”.

2022 Australia and ASEAN Development Committee membership meeting of The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) was held at Gold Coast, Queensland - 2 August 2022. The members were welcomed by Prof. Jiake Xu, the committee Chair, together with lifetime members of ICMRS, Prof. Ming-hao Zheng, Prof. Hong Zhou, Prof. Yin Xiao, and Prof. Rachel Li. This meeting was highlighted by a speech by Professor Ming-hao Zheng, the current president of ICMRS, sharing the history and goals of ICMRS. Prof. Hong Zhou (Ex-chair of the Board of Directors) and Prof. Rachel Li also shared their experience with ICMRS and their scientific career achievements, exemplifying female scientists in the field. Prof. Yin Xiao also delivered a speech about his recent work and his job in a new institute. Congratulations to Prof. Yin Xiao who has recently become a distinguished Professor at Griffith University, at Gold Coast, Queensland. Thanks to Prof. Yin Xiao who contributed to the local organization of this meeting, including the selection of a very nice local cuisine. Special guests include Prof. Peter Lee from the University of Melbourne and Ph D student Eugenie Macfarlane from the University of Sydney. We appreciate the professional photos taken by Prof. David Haynes. The meeting was organised by the Australia and ASEAN Development Committee Chair, Prof. Jiake Xu. The gathering was a very happy occasion to meet many friends face to face alongside the beautiful beach of the Gold Coast.

Dear Colleagues:

On the occasion of New Year 2022, my best wish to our members of ICMRS is that may prosperity and success come to you. May you win more research grants and publish more papers in prestigious journals.

Looking back to year 2021, we all have experienced the relentless changes in our global community. In spite of Covid 19 pandemic has disrupted our lives, we have demonstrated our resilience and developed many innovative ideals for engagement with our members throughout the year. ICMRS, has run more than 20 global webinars and two regular membership meetings this year. The attendance rate of the on-line meetings has been always very high ranged between 150 to 300 members. In year 2021 ICMRS has developed from strength to strength and has increased membership to over 600 members today. Our society official journals have now become top ranking journals in the field of musculoskeletal research. Bone research has reached impact factor of 13.567 and Journal of Orthopaedic Translation has impact factor of 5.191. For the first time ICMRS has run virtual celebration of new year and holiday break. The performances and shows from our members at the celebration were increasable. Here I like to take an opportunity to thank you all. You are the member of the ICMRS family and have made positive contributions to the society.

Looking forward to year 2022, I am optimistic that the pandemics will have far less impact on our live. To improve our engagement with members and with our ICMRS collaborative centres in China, I would like to share our three key initiatives with you in the new year

1) ICMRS has invested significant resources and is now in process to establish several awards to recognise the great achievements made by our members for their scientific research and services to the ICMRS community. There will be an career achievement for members in recognition of their life long career achievements in basic research, translational research and/or clinical research, a mid-career research excellent award for our mid-career members aged below 50 and have completed their highest degree for more than 10 years, and ICMRS Community Service Medals to recognise long and diligent service by members to the society.
2) We will continue to run year-round virtual seminars and introduction of education workshop run by the ICMRS collaborative centres in China. To encourage better engagement, the board has implemented bilingual presentations for the virtual seminars and workshops. Our membership meetings have changed being Spring and Summer membership meetings and will continue engagement with ORS and ASBMR annual meetings.
3) With the uncertainty of pandemic, we hope that the 5th ICMR Conference will be held in Shanghai in November 2022.

Call for ICMRS 2022 Spring Membership Meeting and Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) will hold its 2022 ICMRS Virtual Spring Membership Meeting in February.

The membership webinar meeting will be organized to provide a forum for ICMRS members to exchange the information in all frontiers of musculoskeletal research to bridge the knowledge gap between the scholars from different research fields. To recognize the achievement of young ICMRS members, all Webster Jee Young Investigator Finalists will present their work at the meeting and the Awards will be presented to the winners at the meeting. The winners will be announced during the membership meeting and each awardee will receive an award certificate/plaque and a cash award.

All applicants are asked to attend the meeting because the award will only be given to the attendees. Applicants may find details about ICMRS at http://www.icmrs.net. The program of 2022 ICMRS Membership Meeting will be announced soon.

Eligibility

· Current ICMRS member (for registration: http://www.icmrs.net/join-us)

· First author of accepted ORS abstract for 2022 annual meeting

· Current graduate and/or medical student, post-doc or equivalent, junior faculty and professionals who received PhD or MD no more than 5 years

· Has not received the award previously

· Applicants are not required to be of Chinese heritage

Selection

The accepted ORS abstract in both blind and un-blind formats should be submitted to the following e-mail address: icmrs@icmrs.net, no later than January 15, 2022. All submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed in a blind fashion by a review panel appointed by the ICMRS Program Committee. The top scored abstracts will be selected as the winners. As a general rule, no more than one award will be given to the applicants from the same research laboratory/group.

NEWS REPORT OF 2021 ICMRS-ASBMR MEMBERSHIP ZOOM MEETING

The annual ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Zoom Meeting was held online on October 9, 2021. Professor, Guozhi Xiao, the Program Committee Chair of ICMRS from Southern University of Science and Technology, hosted the meeting. He started by welcoming all ICMRS members, distinguished professors and nonmember guests to attend the meeting. Professor, Ling Qin, the outgoing president of ICMRS from the University of Pennsylvania, firstly introduced Professor Guozhi Xiao as the new president-elect, followed by her “Outgoing President Speech” in that she gave a summary report on the current state of ICMRS and the society’s progresses in the last two years under her leadership. She stated that, by working closely with the ICMRS Executive Committee, her team re-prioritized the initial goals to meet the challenges posed by unexpected COVID19 pandemic. Achievements in her term include, but not limited to, mask distribution during the pandemic, continuous expansion of ICMRS membership and collaborating centers, membership payment restructuring, establishment of ICMRS Scientific Frontier Webinar Series, and functionalization of ICMRS WeChat public account.

Next, Professor Minghao Zheng from the University of Western Australia, officially made his inaugural address as the new ICMRS president (term 2021-2023). He delivered a presentation to share with his vision on how to honor the past, celebrate the present and embrace the future, with the focus on three key areas - commemorate the contribution of past Chinese scholars in the field of musculoskeletal research and education; create more awards for members’ recognition and celebration of achievement and contribution in musculoskeletal research and to the society; and provide an engaging environment for better interactions and collaboration among the members

This year membership meeting has invited two keynote speakers. Dr. Janet Rubin, a Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill provided a highly fascinating presentation entitled “Cells differentiate dynamic from static strain: Nuclear entry of β-catenin, actin and YAP”. Dr. Chuanju Liu, a professor of orthopaedic surgery and cell biology at New York University, presented fundamental scientific findings from his laboratory in “Decoding Anti-inflammatory TNF Receptor 2 Signaling in Autoimmune and Musculoskeletal Diseases”.

Following the keynote speeches are our traditional Webster Jee Young Investigator Award ceremony and oral presentations by the six Webster Jee Young Investigator Awardees on their excellent award-winning research work in the field of bone and cartilage biology and diseases. This year’s winners are Xiaohao Wu from Southern University of Science and Technology, Yuhan Xia from Cornell Medical College and Hospital for Special Surgery, Gongsheng Yuan from University of Pennsylvania, Zhongyang Lv from Nanjing University, Xiaoan Wei and Zeyu Zheng both from Zhejiang University. A cash prize of $500 and an award plaque will be given to each awardee shortly after the meeting.

The 5th International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference- Second annoucement

As you’d be aware, there has been a significant escalation in the Covid 19 pandemic around the world. Traveling and gatherings may add risk of exposure to the Covid 19, which can potentially & significantly disrupt our activities at work and life.

Considering the risk of having the conference is too great to take, the executive committee of ICMRS and Shanghai University has decided to reschedule the 5th ICMR Conference in Shanghai this November to November next year.

Further announcement of meeting will be made in June 2022.

On October 25, 2020, the inauguration ceremony of the Shandong University Qilu Hospital Spine and Spinal Cord Center-International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) Translational Medicine Joint Research Center was held at the general election conference of the basic theory Professional Committee of Shandong Provincial Pain Medical Association and Qilu pain basic research Summit Forum, Jinan, Shandong, China.

The inauguration ceremony was held by Professor Lei Cheng, chairman of the conference, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University. Professor Yuguo Chen, President of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, and Professor Jianmin Li, honorary chairman of the conference, director of orthopedics, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University delivered welcome speeches and stressed the importance of combining clinical and basic medicine. Professor Tingting Tang, immediately past president of ICMRS made a speech and expressed expectations for the future of Joint Research Center. Professor Tingting Tang, Professor Yunzhen Chen, director of spine surgery, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Professor Xiaoling Zhang, chairman of ICMRS China Development Committee, Professor Li Bin, chairman of ICMRS Member Committee, Professor Yang Liu, chairman of ICMRS Youth Committee, and Professor Lei Cheng jointly unveiled the joint center.

Annual ICMRS-ASBMR Zoom Membership Meeting on September 11, 2020

The year of 2020 is a very special year in history. ICMRS has shown its strength, adaptability and endurance to get all our members together from different continents of the world. It is for the first time that ICMRS has a virtual annual membership meeting. It is very pleased to share with you that our 2020 annual ICMRS-ASBMR membership meeting hold in virtual style was very successful. It was live-streamed to more than 200 participants who attended the meeting.

This virtual meeting was started by the welcome and opening speech from Professor Minghao Zheng, President-elect and Chair of Program Committee. This year the president elect went to Australia, marking for the first time that President is outside of USA and China. Professors Liming Bian, Xinping Zhang and Weiguo Zou have also been elected as members of Board of Director.

The President of the ICMRS, Professor Qin Ling from Philadelphia gave a speech summarizing the activities and progress of the society. Professor Minghao Zheng, new president elect has also given a brief on his vision of the society with focus on strong industrial link, the adaptability in current environment and the support of junior members.

Webster Jee Young Investigator Award

ICMRS has received over 30 abstracts for the competitions of annual Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards. Four had been selected for 2020 Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards and the Awardees had given their presentation at the Virtual meeting. The award recipients Zheng Wang is from Texas A&M University College of Dentistry, Wei Yu is from University of Pennsylvania, Rui Hua is from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and Lingxin Zhu is from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Each of Winner will receive the award plaque and incentive.

The final program was a symposium on Forum on Knowledge translation and outcomes. The 2020 Annual ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting was held in Phoenix Convention Center, Phoenix, Arizona, USA, on February 8, 2020. The meeting started with a buffet dinner at 7:00 PM.

The President of the ICMRS, Dr. Ling Qin, delivered the President’s Report. Dr. Qin started her presentation by introducing the ICMRS leadership structure, the Program Committee (Dr. Peter X Ma), Membership Committee (Dr. Bin Li), Communication Committee (Dr. X. Neil Dong), and the China Development Committee (Dr. Xiaoling Zhang). She then acknowledged other leaders, including Chair of Board of Directors (Dr. Yi-Xian Qin), Immediate Past President (Dr. Tingting Tang), Chair of Education Committee (Dr. Jean Jiang), Treasurer (Dr. Sherry Liu), Chair of Women’s Committee (Dr. Liyun Wang), Co-Chairs of Junior Leadership Development Committee (Co-Chairs, Drs. Liu Yang and X. Lucas Lu), Australia and Asian Development Committee (Dr. Jiake Xu), and Europe Development Committee (Dr. Baozhi Yuan).

Then President Qin focused her presentation on the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China. She expressed concerns over the collaboration centers in mainland China and Hong Kong, especially the Orthopedic Hospital of Wuhan Union Hospital. Doctors are overwhelmed with patients and are at great risk of contracting the disease. They are in shortage of medical protective gear for personal protection. Orthopedic doctors are taking care of coronavirus patients at orthopedic hospitals there. Dr. Qin hosted an emergency ICMRS leadership meeting when the news came out, coordinated ICMRS leaders to purchase protective masks and equipment, and managed to ship them to collaboration centers in China. President Ling Qin asked ICMRS members to be united to fight the coronavirus epidemics. If anyone has information about purchasing medical protective gear like N95 respirators and medical surgical masks or want to donate them, please contact ICMRS by email or mail donation to Dr. Xiaoling Zhang, Chair of China Development Committee.

Then three Webster Jee Young Investigator Awardees were announced. The award recipients were Elizabeth R. Kahle from Drexel University, Shuangfei Ni from The Johns Hopkins University, and Lutian Yao from University of Pennsylvania. Each winner was presented with an award plaque and a cash prize.

The final official program was a Science and Technology Forum. Dr. Xu Cao from The Johns Hopkins University gave a presentation entitled “PTH Biology and Therapeutic Development.” Dr. Cao presented a vivid scientific story of PTH by introducing PTH biology from mammal migration from the sea to the land. He then presented data on PTH’s role in disease, regeneration of a variety of tissues, and its new applications treating various orthopedic diseases. The audience asked many questions and triggered many interesting discussions. The Forum ended at about 9:10 PM. Members socialized afterwards until the official closing of the meeting at 9:30 PM.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) will hold its 2020 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, on February 8, 2020 during ORS 2020 Annual Meeting. This membership meeting is organized to provide a forum for ICMRS members to exchange information in all frontiers of musculoskeletal research to bridge the knowledge gap between the scholars from different research fields. To recognize the achievements of young ICMRS members, Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards will be presented to the winners at the meeting. The winners will be announced during the membership meeting and each awardee will receive an award certificate/plaque and a cash award. All applicants are asked to attend the meeting because the award will only be given to the attendees. Applicants may find details about ICMRS at http://www.icmrs.net. The program of 2020 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting will be announced soon.

Eligibility

· First author of accepted ORS abstract for 2020 annual meeting

Selection

The accepted ASBMR abstract in both blind and un-blind formats should be submitted to the following e-mail address: icmrs@icmrs.net, no later than January 3, Friday. All submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed in a blind fashion by a review panel appointed by the ICMRS Program Committee. The top scored abstracts will be selected as the winners. As a general rule, no more than one award will be given to the applicants from the same research laboratory/group.

The 2019 ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Meeting was held in Hyatt Regency Orlando, USA, on September 20, 2019. The meeting started at 7:00 PM with about 80 ICMRS members attended. Dr. Peter X Ma, President-elect and Chair of Program Committee, opened the meeting by welcoming attendees and acknowledging those ICMRS members who contributed to the meeting organization and student volunteers for their help. The President of the ICMRS, Dr. Tingting Tang, gave a speech summarizing the activities and progress of the society during his term of the past two years. Dr. Tang and his leadership team have accomplished a lot and made substantial progress in each of the identified areas needing improvement. The new President, Dr. Ling Qin, gave an inaugural speech to present her vision of the society and the plan for the coming two years.

Then 3 Webster Jee Young Investigator Awardees were announced. The award recipients were Xiangjiao Yi from the University of Rochester, Jun Ying from Washington University, and Jiayu Wei from Zhejiang University and Brown University. Each winner was presented with an award plaque and a cash prize.

The final program was a round table discussion on the topic of leadership. Dr. Peter Ma hosted the discussion and six panelists who have significant leadership experience shared their insights centered around what is leadership, how to develop leadership skills, the path to leadership, the responsibilities of leaders, etc. The six panelists were Yi-Xian Qin from Stony Brook University, Edward Guo from Columbia University, Jean Jiang from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, James H Wang from University of Pittsburgh, Hua Zhu (David) Ke from Angitia Biopharmaceuticals, Linda Ma from Eli Lilly and Company. The meeting was closed at 9:30 PM.

Co-sponsored by the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS), Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and South China Biomedical Materials (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., the 4th International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC-2019) was held at SUSTech, Shenzhen, China, August 9-12, 2019. The theme of this conference is “Strengthening basic research, Promoting scientific and technological innovation, and Serving the development of Greater Bay Area”. Nearly 700 delegates from all over the world participated in the conference.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Guozhi Xiao, Co-Chairman of the Conference, Dean of Zhicheng College of SUSTech and Director of ICMRS Collaborating Research Center. Professor Xiao first expressed his warm welcome to the experts from all over the world who have long supported the international Chinese orthopaedic research. He said that this conference provided an important platform for a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the world's medical field. It will play an important role in enhancing academic exchanges, expanding academic horizons, understanding the dynamics of academic circles, and promoting scientific and technological innovation. At the same time, it has effectively created a "one belt, one road" health cooperation platform and broadened the health attributes of the construction and development of Greater Bay Area. He hoped that SUSTech would be able to enhance communication through this platform, seize opportunities and promote cooperation, and make positive contributions to the development of the Greater Bay Area.

Following that, Professor Changsheng Liu, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Shanghai University, Professor Kunzheng Wang, President-elect of the Chinese Orthopedic Association and Director of the Joint Surgery Center of Xi'an Jiaotong University, and Professor Dazhi Yang, Director of Spinal Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech, delivered opening remarks and congratulate the starting of ICMRC-2019. Finally, Professor Tingting Tang, President of ICMRS, briefly introduced the history and current status of the society as well as previous ICMRCs. On behalf of the society, he thanked all guests and representatives, sponsors, scientific and organizing committees of the conference for their support to the congress.

More than 90 invited speakers and distinguished scholars attended ICMRC-2019, including Professor Yixian Qin of Stony Brook University, Chair of Board of Directors, ICMRS, Prof. Ling Qin of University of Pennsylvania, President-elect of ICMRS, Professor William W. Lu of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Ling Qin of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor X. Edward Guo of Columbia University and Professor Cao Xu of Johns Hopkins University, Professor James H-C. During ICMRC-2019, the scholars discussed the important problems faced by orthopaedic diagnosis and treatment and the research direction of orthopaedic related diseases, exchanged their experiences in clinical, basic and translational research of orthopaedics, and provided new ideas for the future development of orthopaedics. The conference included three basic science venues and one clinical venue. The participants discussed the molecular mechanism of skeletal diseases, biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue regeneration, transformational medicine, targeted therapy, skeletal development and aging, joint biology, musculoskeletal diseases and treatment, and the application of new clinical technologies. The conference also conducted competition for Young Investigator Best Paper Awards. A total of 14 oral awards and 14 poster awards were selected (2 first prizes, 4 second prizes and 8 third prizes for each category).

ICMRC-2019 is another successful international Chinese orthopaedic research event held by ICMRS, following the previous ICMRCs in Suzhou in 2013, Changsha in 2015 and Shihezi in 2017, respectively. The continuous and rapid growth of abstract submissions and registered participants in this series of conferences reflects the continuous expansion of the multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic research in China, and the increasing academic impact of ICMRS. The conference, held at the SUSTech, also demonstrates the school's pragmatic and realistic academic style, opens up new opportunities for the school's foreign cooperation, and will play a positive role in promoting talent introduction and academic influence. Next, ICMRS, as an international platform, will help promote health development of the Greater Bay Area.

2019 Annual ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting

The 2019 annual ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting was held in Austin on February 2nd, 2019. We have a total of 90 attendees with guests from NIH and JOR. To enhance the social bonding among our members and to better nurture our young investigators, this meeting continue last year’s format of roundtable discussions, by asking the attendees to choose their interested topic and stay at the corresponded table during the entire meeting.

The meeting started with a President’s Report presented by Dr. Ling Qin, President-elect and Chair of Program Committee, on behalf of current President Dr. Tingting Tang. This report summarizes the progress of our society during Dr. Tang’s presidency in the past one and half years, focusing on committees, membership, communication, education, development in China, and sponsored meetings. New committees have been established to increase the regional diversity of our society and enhance the scientific exchange among our members. They include Australia and Asean Development Committee, Europe Develop Committee, and Scientific Committees, which are subdivided into Bone and Joint Biology, Stem Cells and Regeneration, Biomechanical and Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterial and Translational Research. Dr. Qin also announced that our society’s biennial meeting, the 4^th International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference will be held in Shenzhen, China, on August 9-12, this year and she encouraged our society members to submit abstracts and attend this meeting.

Following this, Dr. Stuart Goodman from Journal of Orthopaedic Research gave a talk about new developments of JOR and the journal’s outreach to China.

This meeting was then highlighted by the announcement of Webster Jee Young Investigator Awardees by Dr. Chuanju Liu: Jiahui Hang from Brown University, Yulong Wei from the University of Pennsylvania, and Wenguang Liu from Xi’an Jiaotong University. Each awardee gave a brief introduction about their outstanding research. They were presented with an award plaque and a cash prize of $500 each.

The major part of this meeting is a 1-hour panel discussion of Promoting Research Integrity with panelists Drs. Yi-Xian Qin, James Wang, Ed Guo, and Stuart Goodman and Chaired by Dr. Jean Jiang. At the school Dean and department Chair levels, those panelists provided their perception and interpretation about research integrity, ethics, intellectual property, and conflicts of interest/disclosure. Questions from audience regarding specific cases further enhanced this discussion.

At the end, special thanks go to volunteers from our society who helped to organize this membership meeting: Dr. Wei Yao from UC Davis, Dr. Neil Dong from University of Texas, Dr. Sherry Liu from University of Pennsylvania, and abstract reviewers for Webster Jee Young Investigator Award.

2018 ICMRS Board Meeting successfully held in Suzhou

2018 ICMRS Board Meeting, namely 2018 ICMRS Suzhou Expert Forum, was held in Castel Hotel, Suzhou, on October 16th 2018. More than 40 board members from all over the world gathered in Suzhou to attend the Board Meeting. The Meeting was hosted by ICMRS, and organized by The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University.

ICMRS Chair Prof. Tingting Tang addressed the board meeting, detailing the development of ICMRS and its infrastructure, and looking forward to its further development.

Subsequently, experts from home and abroad, including Prof. Ling Qin and Prof. Liyun Wang, discussed the development and recent planning of the ICMRS through video conference.

Next, representatives from newly established research centers in Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dalian reported on their work one by one.

Following the introduction of the newly established research centers, Prof. Yixian Qin proposed the idea of Webster Jee Award Fund and exchanged views with a number of experts on specific operational details and funding sources.

Then, several candidates for the Chair of the Scientific Committee, such as Chen Lin, introduced their work briefly.

Prof. James Wang reported online about the challenges of ICMRS development and the way forward.

Prof. Hong Zhou and Prof. Ling Qin put forward their views.

Prof. Lucus Lu suggested that the development of North American scholars should be strengthened, which was supported by the experts.

Prof. Guozhi Xiao and Prof. Weijia Lv briefed the attending experts on behalf of the Preparatory Committee on the ICMRC agenda for 2019, which will be held in Shenzhen.

At last, Doctor Xiao Wang from the newest established “Institute of Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Treatments of Soochow University- ICMRS Collaborating Center for Osteoporotic Fractures” introduced the center’s recent achievements on iron metabolism and osteoporosis.

The 2018 Australia Symposium of International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) was held in Perth, Western Australia, on the 4th of October 2018. Chaired by Prof. Jiake Xu, together with Prof. Yin Xiao, Prof. Yue Ding, Prof. Nathan Pavlos, and Prof. Xiaoling Zhang, more than 50 attendees were involved in this symposium. This meeting has put together a wide range of cutting-edge research in bone biology that appealed both clinician and basic scientists in musculoskeletal field. Topics presented by our invited speakers from China, the USA, Singapore and Australia include bone cell biology, novel therapeutic applications for bone disease, biomaterials and bone tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting for tissue and organ, as well as translational of biomaterials in orthopaedics field. Dinner time after the symposium was also provided for further networking and discussion. The breadth and depth of this symposium, alongside with the breathtaking scenery beside Swan River, delivered a vibrant and valuable meeting for all members.

The 2018 annual ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Meeting was held in Montreal, Canada, on September 28, 2018. More than 80 ICMRS members attended this meeting. To enhance the social bonding among our members and to better nurture our young investigators, this meeting adopted a new format, roundtable discussions, by asking the attendees to choose their interested topics during online registration and stay at the chosen table during the entire meeting. Each table was led by 2-4 discussion leaders volunteered by the lifetime members of our society.

The meeting started with a Welcome Message from Dr. Ling Qin, President-elect and Chair of Program Committee, by acknowledging those ICMRS members who help to organize this meeting and introducing the new meeting format. Following that, Dr. Tingting Tang gave a Presidential Speech summarizing the progress of our society since his inauguration last year and his future plan in the next year, focusing on leadership and committees, membership recruitment, communications, regional development, journals, and fundraising. Specifically, he introduced the newly established Scientific Committees, including the Bone and Joint Biology Committee, the Stem cells and Regenerative Medicine Committee, the Biomechanical and Biomedical Engineering Committee and the Biomaterials and Translational Research Committee. Dr. Lin Chen from Army Medical University in Chongqing, Dr. Gang Li from Chinese University of Hongkong, Dr. Ming Zhang from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr. Changsheng Liu from East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai have been nominated as the chair for each committee.

This meeting was then highlighted by the announcement of Webster Jee Young Investigator Awardees: Yunshu Wu from Sichuan University, Kazuki Inoue from Hospital for Special Surgery, Yujiao Han from Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and Robert Tower from the University of Pennsylvania. Each awardee gave a brief introduction about their outstanding research. They were presented with an award plaque and a cash prize of $400 each.

The following roundtable discussions were set in 8 tables with topics such as Pathways to be independent, Industry career, Opportunities in China, Bone remodeling, Osteocyte biology, Bone biomechanics, Cartilage and diseases, and Mesenchymal stem cells. These discussions were actively carried out till the end of the meeting.

International Workshop on Bone Regeneration-Biomaterials for Musculoskeletal Regeneration successfully completed in East China University of Science and Technology

On May 6^th, 2018, the “International Workshop on Bone Regeneration- Biomaterials for Musculoskeletal Regeneration” was successfully held by Engineering Research Center for biomedical Materials of Ministry of Education in East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST). The attendees included the Prof. Chang-sheng Liu, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice President of ECUST, Prof. Ting-ting Tang, President of ICMRS, ICMRS senior members, invited specialists, and researchers from institutes in Shanghai.

The ICMRS President, Ting-ting Tang gave a brief opening address for the workshop with his thanks to ECUST. The Vice President, Chang-sheng Liu gave a warm welcome to the attendees with his wishes to the workshop, and many thanks to the ICMRS for their supports.

In the meeting, Prof. Ming-hao Zheng , Prof. Peter Ma, Prof. Jerry Feng, Prof. Ling Qin (USA), Prof. Lin Chen, Prof. Jiake Xu, Prof. Lidan You, Prof. David Ke, and Prof. Jing Wang presented their latest achievements and research results in their lectures. As an important part of the conference, Prof. Ling Qin (HK), Prof. Yixian Qin, Prof. William Lv, Prof. Peng Shang, Prof. Xiao-ling Zhang, Prof. Bin Li, Prof. Xiao-Chun Bai, and other specialists participated in the constructive discussions and gave thoughtful suggestions.

At the end of the conference, Prof. Liu gave a summary for the meeting, suggested consolidating the co-operations between the different subjects and challenging the frontier issues in the research area.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society Membership Meeting was Held in Shanghai, China

During the 2018 Shanghai International Congress on Orthopaedic Advanced Techniques and Clinical Translational Research (OTR), the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) held membership meeting on May 5, 2018. This is the first time that the ICMRS’s Membership Meeting was held in China. More than 100 ICMRS members and invited guests attended the conference. Prof. Peng Shang, Chairman of the ICMRS Membership Committee, chaired the meeting.

At the beginning of conference, Prof. Tingting Tang, President of the ICMRS, introduced the history, constitution, membership regimen and official journals (Bone Research and Journal of Orthopaedic Translation) of ICMRS. He also summarized the achievements ICMRS achieved in the past, and provided plans for the future. Moreover, Prof. Tang grandly introduced several former presidents of the ICMRS attending the conference, including Prof. Meishu Shi, Prof. Huazhu Ke, Prof. Di Chen, Prof. Yixian Qin, Prof. Ling Qin (Hong Kong), Prof. Xu Cao, Prof. Huicong Wang and President-Elect Prof. Ling Qin (USA).

During the meeting, Prof. Xu Cao, the founding editor of Bone Research, gave a keynote speech entitled with “Strategies for Preparing High Quality Academic Publications”, which scientifically and vividly described the essence of scientific research and academic paper. Moreover, he gave a detailed answer to the universal question of “how to publish high-impact papers”. His speech raised a lot of resonance and discussion. During the Q&A session, Prof. Jianquan Feng put forward his own views on the contents of Prof. Cao’s report, resulting in additional hot discussions.

At the end of the meeting, Prof. Shang Peng delivered the closing speech and invited all the attended members to take a group photo.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) hold its 2018 ICMRS-OTR Membership Meeting during the 12th International Congress on Orthopaedic Advanced Technique and Clinical Translational Research (OTR) in Shanghai, China on May 4th, 2018. To recognize the achievement of young ICMRS members, 2018 ICMRS Young Investigator Best Paper/ Poster Awards were presented to the winners at the meeting. All winners were announced at the opening ceremony of the congress and every winner received a certificate and cash award.

All submitted abstracts were blind peer reviewed by a review panel appointed by the ICMRS Program Committee. The top scored 20 abstracts for oral presentations and 30 for posters were selected for the final competition in Shanghai on May 4th, 2018. After competition, 12 young investigators stood out as Best Paper / Poster Awardees.

At the end of the opening ceremony of OTR, the ceremony was highlighted by the announcement of 2018 ICMRS Young Investigator Best Paper Award/ Best Poster Award by prof. Ling Qin. The award ceremony was hold and addressed by president of ICMRS, Prof. Tingting Tang.

Opening Ceremony of SIAT-ICMRS Collaborating Center for Translational Medicine Research

The Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT)- International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) Collaborating Center for Translational Medicine Research (中国科学院深圳先进技术研究院-国际华人骨研学会转化医学联合研究中心) was officially established in Shenzhen on April 14, 2018. Prof. Tingting Tang, ICMRS President, Prof. Peng Shang, Chair of Membership Committee, and Prof. Bin Li, Chair of China Development Committee, attended the opening ceremony on behalf of the society.

Prof. Ling Qin, director of the Translational Medicine Research and Development Center (TMC) of SIAT, delivered an opening remark. Then Dr. Yuxiao Lai, TMC executive director, introduced TMC and the background and vision of the establishment of the collaborating center in detail. Following that, Prof. Tingting Tang, Dr. Hairong Zheng, vice president of SIAT, Mr. Bin Liu, Minister of National Food and Drug Supervision and Administration of Medical Instrument Technical Review Center, delivered talks respectively. They all agree that the collaborating center will function to integrate domestic and foreign scientific research resources and will provide strong support for the development of SIAT by promoting basic orthopedic research and clinical translation.

After the opening ceremony, the TMC held a seminar which focused on 3D printing technology and clinical applications in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao areas.

Dear ICMRS members and Friends,

With a great sadness, we want to let you know that our beloved past-president Professor Webster S.S. Jee passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, with his son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter and other family members, students and friends in his bed side at 3:15 am on April 3^rd, 2018. Professor Jee was 92-year-old. Our deepest condolences go to Professor Jee’s family and friends.

Professor Jee will be forever remembered by all of us as an inspirationalscientist, a great mentor, a great friend, and most importantly a great person. Many of us had been benefited from Professor Jee’s mentorship and support for our scientific career as well as our personal life. Professor Jee was one of the founding member and had been the most dedicated champion of ICHTS/ICMRS since its establishment in 1994. Because of his many contributions, strong commitment and leadership, our society dedicated the “Webster Jee Young Investigator’s Award” in his honor. Professor Jee’s legacy with ICMRS will live on among us.

Professor Jee’s family has decided to hold a Celebration of Life Banquet to celebrate his successful and wonderful life for almost 93 years on Saturday, April 28^th, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) will hold the 2018 ICMRS-OTR Membership Meeting during the 12^th International Congress on Orthopaedic Advanced Technique and Clinical Translational Research (OTR) in Shanghai, China on May 4th, 2018. To recognize the achievement of young ICMRS members, 2018 ICMRS Young Investigator Best Paper Award & 2018 ICMRS Young Investigator Best Poster Award will be presented to the winners at the meeting. The winners will be announced at the opening ceremony of the Congress and every winner will receive a certificate/plaque and cash award.

Eligibility

l Applicants must be active ICMRS members (membership enrollment: http://www.icmrs.net/join-us) and register for the OTR Congress.

l Graduate and/or medical students, post-docs or equivalent, junior faculty and professionals who are within 5 years of completing their final degrees may apply.

l Applicants should hold an academic rank no greater than assistant professor.

l Applicants do not necessarily to be of Chinese heritage.

The 2018 Annual ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting at New Orleans on March 20, 2018

The 2018 annual ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting was held in New Orleans on March 10, 2018. We have a total of 110 attendees with some eminent guests. To enhance the social bonding among our members and to better nurture our young investigators, this meeting adopted a new format, roundtable discussions, by asking the attendees to choose their interested topic during online registration and stay at the corresponded table during the entire meeting. Each table was led by 2-4 discussion leaders volunteered by the lifetime members of our society and NIH officials.

Our society has steadily grown in the past several years, now reaching more than 500 members and a total of 29 collaborating centers in China. In the past several months, we have established several regional development committees. We aim to form the scientific committee in the near future. The following roundtable discussions were set in 10 tables, each with a distinct topic ranging from career development, publication, grant application, to musculoskeletal biology and engineering. With 24 experts from their respective areas and 4 NIH officials (Program Director and Scientific Review Officials), these discussions were actively carried out for an hour with some tables that lasted beyond the meeting closing time.

At the end, a surprise guest, Dr. Savio Woo, a member of both the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, gave a closing remark by urging young investigators to pursue the best science in their career.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) will hold its 2018 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting at New Orleans, LA, USA on Saturday, March 10^th, 2018. The meeting is organized to provide a forum for ICMRS members to exchange the information in all frontiers of musculoskeletal research to bridge the knowledge gap between the scholars from different research fields. To recognize the achievement of young ICMRS members, three Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards will be presented to the winners at the meeting. The winners will be announced during the membership meeting and each awardee will receive an award certificate/plaque and a cash award of $500. All applicants are required to attend the meeting because the award will only be given to the attendees. The program of 2018 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting will be announced soon.

The 2017 annual ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Meeting was held in Denver on September 8, 2017. A total of 78 active ICMRS members attended this meeting. Earlier this year, our society conducted an election to vote for President-elect, officers, and board members (election results are listed below). Therefore, this meeting marks an important transition of our leadership team. Dr. Ling Qin, the outgoing Membership Committee Chair and new President-Elect, presided over the meeting. The meeting started with a summary report from the departing president Dr. James Wang on the achievements of ICMRS under his leadership over the past two years (2015-2017), including revamping ICMRS website, implementing membership reform, establishing Mentorship Program, enhancing educational services, expanding China Collaborating Centers, and improving the financial status. He also highlighted our society’s official meeting, the 3rd International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC), which was successfully held in Shihezi, China, last month.

Following Dr. Wang’s report, our new President, Dr. Tingting Tang, gave an inaugural address introducing his new leadership team members and outlining his strategies of expanding our society within the next 2 years. One major move is to create two new regional development committees: Australia and Asean Development Committee and Europe Development Committee. Another focus is to launch Scientific Committees that promote research excellence and collaboration among members.

Dr. Qin, the President-Elect, introduced herself as a long-term society member, briefly covered the society history, and requested continuous support from our members.

This meeting was highlighted by the announcement of Webster Jee Young Investigator Awardees: Ren Xu from Cornell University, Jun Li from Rush University, and Wei-Ju Tseng form the University of Pennsylvania. Each awardee gave a brief introduction about their outstanding research. They were presented with an award plaque and a cash prize of $500 each.

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) successfully convened the 3rd International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC-2017) in Shihezi, Xinjiang, China on Aug. 17-20, 2017. This biennial conference, concurrent with the 5th International Biomedical Forum of West China, was co-organized by ICMRS and Shihezi University, and hosted by the First Affiliated Hospital of Shihezi University. The theme of ICMRC-2017 was to "Enhance basic research, promote scientific and technological innovation, and serve ‘The Belt and Road’". Aiming at enhancing communication among medical research colleagues, exchanging the latest research findings and expanding the international view of domestic scholars, leading scholars from the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, and the mainland China were invited to present the worldwide leading-edge research findings and technologies in the basic medical study of musculoskeletal system.

Prof. James H-C. Wang, ICMRS President and Conference Co-Chair, delivered a speech in the opening ceremony of ICMRC-2017 on behalf of ICMRS.

Prof. Chenhui Shi, President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Shihezi University and Conference Co-Chair, chaired the opening ceremony of ICMRC-2017.

With nearly 400 attendees, 3 parallel sessions (2 basic science sessions and 1 clinical study session), 108 podium presentations (including 13 plenary lectures, 57 invited talks, and 38 oral presentations), and 63 poster presentations, ICMRC-2017 turned out to be a great success.

Besides the regular scientific presentations, ICMRC-2017 also featured translational strategies by inviting venture capital professionals to present valuable information on topics such as start-up financing and venture investment. Prof. Xu Cao, Immediate Past President of ICMRS and Conference Co-Chair, presented a special talk on utilizing venture capital to promote translational skeletal disease research. In addition, ICMRS Junior Leadership Development Committee (ICMRS-JLDC), chaired by Profs Liu Yang and Lucas Lu, organized a special session on the topic "How to publish a high impact paper" by ICMRS Junior Leadership Development Committee (ICMRS-JLDC). Professors Xu Cao, Hong Zhou, and Anne-Marie Malfait shared their thoughts for preparing high quality academic papers as well as how to follow with a rebuttal and get animal studies accepted for publication in high profile journals.

During the conference, the China Development Committee (CDC) also organized an ICMRS China Collaborating Centers (CCCs) & CDC business meeting, which included the CCC representatives, CDC members, newly approved lifetime members (LTMs) of ICMRS, and specially invited guests. President James Wang presented an opening remark and a brief introduction of important society affairs. Honor plaques were presented to the newly approved LTMs who attended ICMRC-2017. Four newly approved CCCs briefly introduced themselves. In addition, the Orthopaedic Research Center in the University of Hong Kong - ICMRS Collaborating Center for Bone Diseases and Aging, directed by Prof. William W. Lu, made a brief introduction to show their interest in hosting the 4th International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC-2019) in Hong Kong.

The Award Committee selected and presented 28 prizes in total, including 14 best presentations in the oral and 14 best presentations in the poster categories.

Finally, the conference ended with the closing remarks from Prof. Tingting Tang, President-elect of ICMRS, and Prof. Xu Cao.

2017 ICMRC Education Workshop: How to Publish a High Impact Paper

At the 2017 ICMRC meeting, the Youth Development Committee successfully held an education session "How to Publish a High Impact Paper." This session chaired by Dr. Lucas Lu and Dr. Liu Yang, invited three outstanding speakers Dr. Xu Cao, Dr. Hong Zhou, and Dr. Anne-Marie Malfait, with the following topics:

The First Meeting of 2017 Junior Leadership Development Committee of International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS-JLDC)

At the occasion of the grand opening ceremony of the Third International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference hosted in the Henghe Hotel in Shihezi, Xinjiang, the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) convened the establishment meeting of ICMRS-Junior Leadership Development Committee (ICMRS-JLDC) on the evening of August 17th. Prof. Liu Yang from the Orthopaedics Institute of Xijing Hospital, who is Co-Chair of ICMRS-JLDC, officiated the meeting.

Prof. James Wang, the current President of ICMRS, Prof. Tingting Tang, the President-Elect of ICMRS, Prof. Yixian Qin, the Chair of the Board Committee, Prof. Bin Li, the Chair of the Board Committee of China, Prof. Ling Qin, the Chair of the Membership Committee, Prof. Huibin Sun, the Chair of the Education Committee, Prof. Xin Lu, the Chair of the Overseas ICMRS-JLDC and ICMRS consultants---Prof. Huazhu Ke, Prof. Hong Zhou and Prof. Ling Qin attended the establishment meeting. Seventeen members of the first ICMRS-JLDC were also present at the meeting.

Prof. James Wang, President of ICMRS, reviewed the process of establishing ICMRS-JLDC, and highlighted the goals of this ICMRS Committee, which are to establish and seek more ICMRS collaboration centers in China, and promote internationalization of Chinese musculoskeletal research on behalf of ICMRS. He also stressed that it was important to cultivate more academic talents to sustain an ever-growing impact of ICMRS in years to come.

Other members of ICMRS-BOD also projected a vision of future ICMRS-JLDC. Prof. Tingting Tang and Prof. Bin Li put forward specific requirements for the future work of ICMRS-JLDC namely, assisting collaboration centers to facilitate ICMRS’s work, and making good use of the WeChat to propagate and carry out plans of education and publicity for ICMRS.

Prof. Liu Yang, as the Chair of the first ICMRS-JLDC, delivered a speech summarizing the requirements of all ICMRS-BOD members for the future work of ICMRS-JLDC:

1. ICMRS-JLDC would function as the link and bridge between domestic cooperation centers and ICMRS and seek all kinds of opportunities for collaboration, including applying for collaborative scientific programs, jointly training postgraduates, encouraging young scientists’ exchanging programs and even promoting visiting scholarship to facilitate academic dialogues.

2. ICMRS-JLDC not only will be responsible for expanding its own members, but also could recommend domestic musculoskeletal researchers or institutes to become ICMRS members or new collaboration centers to enhance influence of ICMRS in China.

3. ICMRS-JLDC would actively respond to future conferences of ICMRS, conduct academic reports, organize workshops, and facilitate hosting academic competitions for young scientists.

4. ICMRS-JLDC would strengthen academic exchanges between ICMRS and communities or conferences in the field of bone and mineral research to expand the impact of ICMRS in this field.

At the end of the meeting, Prof. Yixian Qin, Chair of ICMRS BOD, sent his wishes and concluded, “ICMRS-JLDC consists of vibrant and enthusiastic young scientists and they will be the hope of ICMRS in future!”

Our society’s official meeting, the 3rd International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Conference (ICMRC), together with the 5th International Biomedical Forum of West China will be held this summer in Shihezi, Xinjiang, China, a beautiful city known as “The jade of desert”. This combined conference is organized and sponsored by International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS), Xinjiang Production & Construction Corps, Shihezi University, and Xinjiang Medical University.

The theme of this conference is to “Enhance basic research, promote scientific and technological innovation, and serve The Belt and Road”. Aiming at enhancing communication among medical research colleagues, spreading the latest research findings and expanding the international view of domestic scholars, we will invite leading scholars from the United States, Australia, Japan etc and excellent domestic scholars from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and the mainland as speakers. They will share their cutting-edge research findings and technologies in the biomedical research field and exchange scientific information by various means, including presentations, seminars, and posters.

The 5th International Biomedical Forum of West China, hosted by Shihezi University and jointly organized by ICMRS, is an international academic conference aiming to promote the biomedical research. The 2017 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting was held at San Diego on March 20. More than 120 ICMRS members attended the meeting. After a special dinner and socializing event, Dr. Tingting Tang, Chair of Program Committee and President-Elect, announced the opening of the meeting. This was followed by a speech from the President, Dr. James Wang. He reviewed those ICMRS events in 2016 and accomplishments, particularly in membership reform, and finally announced the upcoming biennial meeting in Xinjiang this year.

A major event in the meeting was the education workshop on opportunities and grant applications at the NIH, which was organized by Dr. Herb Sun, Chair of Education Committee of ICMRS. Dr. Fei Wang from NIH, and Dr. Yi-Xian Qin, Board Director of ICMRS, each gave a speech. Drs. Di Chen and Jeremy Mao then joined the panel discussions to share their views and experience as grant applicants and reviewers in NIH grant application. Two representatives from Chinese Orthopaedic Research Society (CORS), Dr. Shi-qing Feng and Dr. Hong-bin Lu also commented on their experience as reviewers for grant applications from National Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

Following the workshop. Dr. Tingting Tang announced three winners of the Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards. Mr. Chao Liang from Hong Kong Baptist University, Ms. Qing Li from Drexel University, and Mr. Yun Gao from the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, received an award, with a plaque and $500 check each.

Education Workshop at 2017 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting

The Education Workshop “Opportunities and Grant Applications at the NIH” was held during the 2017 ICMRS-ORS Membership meeting organized by Dr. Tingting Tang, the President Elect, in San Diego on March 20, 2017. The workshop started with two keynote speakers: Dr. Fei Wang, Program Director of the Musculoskeletal Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Program, Division of Musculoskeletal Diseases at NIAMS, NIH, and Dr. Yi-Xian Qin, Professor and Director of Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Wang’s presentation titled “Initiatives of NIH and logistics for applications,” provided an overview of the NIH grant opportunities available for scientists at various stages of career development. Dr. Qin’s presentation “Grant writing perspective” discussed how to choose an appropriate funding mechanism to apply to, and how to write a proposal with scientific rigor and to avoid potential fatal flaws. The slides from Dr. Fei Wang and Dr. Yi-Xian Qin are available to ICMRS members on the website.

The panel discussion was co-led by Dr. Wang, Dr. Qin, and panelists Dr. Di Chen, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at Rush University Medical Center, and Dr. Jeremy Mao, Professor of Dentistry and Director of the Center for Craniofacial Regeneration at Columbia University. Dr. Chen and Dr. Mao shared some of their personal experiences and lessons regarding the strategy on applying for NIH grants.

Several ICMRS members in particular raised questions and joined the discussion with the panel, and other participants such as Dr. Rocky Tuan, University of Pittsburg, joined the discussion and shared their valuable insight. The delegates from China, Dr. Shi-Qing Feng and Dr. Hongbin Lu also attended the meeting and shared their strong enthusiasm and personal experiences with the audience. Many discussions continued after the meeting, with great feedback and suggestions on the workshop topic.

The Education Committee would like to thank the speakers and panelists for their great contribution and outstanding work, the guidance from the ICMRS leadership, and the participation and support from the ICMRS members.

Description

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) will hold its 2017 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting on Monday, March 20^th, 2017 at San Diego. The meeting is organized to provide a forum for ICMRS members to exchange the information in frontiers of all musculoskeletal research, to bridge the knowledge gap between the scholars from different research fields, to promote young investigators in the field for successful career developments, and to share the successful experience in career development by senior researchers. To recognize the achievement of young ICMRS members, three Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards will be given at the meeting. The winners will be announced during the membership meeting and each awardee will receive an award certificate/plaque and a $500 check. All applicants are asked to attend the meeting because the award will only be given to the recipients who attend. Applicants may find details about ICMRS at http://www.icmrs.net. International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) Workshop on "Advances in Multidisciplinary Basic and Clinical Research on Spinal Disorders" was held in Shanghai, China on October 23, 2016. The workshop was one of the five sessions of the Annual Meeting of the Chinese Traditional Medicine Society Musculoskeletal Injuries. The six keynote speakers and their lecture topics were - Dr. Peter Ma (马晓龙), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, "Regenerating nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc using biodegradable nanofibrous polymer scaffolds"; Dr. Lin Qin (秦岭), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, "Spinal disorders induced by osteoporosis and clinical treatment"; Dr. Yi-Xian Qin (钦逸仙), New York University, Stony Brook, "Biomechanical mechanism and finite element simulation"; Dr. Yong-Jun Wang (王拥军), Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, "Prolonged instability induces calcified hypertrophy in the endplate of lumbar"; Dr. Bin Li (李斌), Soochow University, "Biomaterials for spinal repair and regeneration" and Dr. Di Chen (陈棣), Rush University, "Beta-catenin is a key mediator in the development of spondyloarthritis."

The workshop was chaired by Dr. Herb Sun (孙慧斌), Chair of the ICMRS Education Committee. The workshop emphasized the basic concepts while providing the attendees with up-to-date advances in the field. The workshop turned out to be a truly exciting event. Although the Chair extended the discussion time, due to active participation, the discussion proceeded beyond the tea break and lunch time. As Dr. Qi Shi (施杞) from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine said, "This workshop is a milestone that combines the treasures of traditional Chinese medicine with the cutting edge modern biomedical science and technology in the field." Dr. Qingping Dong (董清平) from Hei-Long-Jiang Traditional Chinese Medical University made the following comment, "This was the most impressive symposium I ever attended. I hope this kind of Chinese traditional medicine and modern science communication and dialog will continue, and the workshop will be held again in the near future." As Dr. James Wang (王惠聪), President of ICMRS, addressed in his opening remarks, education is one of the major missions of ICMRS. This workshop is the first of its kind, while many are on the way. When the meeting concluded, Dr. Wang agreed with many of the meeting participants that the meeting accomplished its objective: "The workshop aims to promote scientific and professional excellence in the field of spine disorders. The workshop will provide up-to-date, state-of-the-art science, and cutting edge research technology development in basic, translational, and clinical research." The major contents of the workshop will be posted on the ICMRS website, which will be accessible to all ICMRS members.

News Report of ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Meeting at Atlanta, September 16, 2016

The annual ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Meeting was held in Atlanta on September 16, 2016. Dr. Ling Qin, the Membership Committee Chair, presided over the meeting. She started by thanking Dr. Tingting Tang, the chair of program committee for his leadership in the preparation of this meeting, and Dr. Neil Dong for an excellent job in putting together this meeting. Dr. James Wang, the President of ICMRS, gave a presidential report on the state of ICMRS and the society’s progresses in the last one year under his leadership. He stated that his team has achieved the initially set goals, thanks to the hard work from the ICMRS Executive Committee. In particular, he announced that a fully functional ICMRS website is in place now. This website has all-in-one solution, including website management, membership management, e-mail announcement, online payment and event registration. ICMRS membership has been reformed, and now there are more than 370 active members, including 129 student members, 159 regular members, and 82 life-time members. The membership continues to grow. Additionally, ICMRS has set up a mentor program, so far with 12 senior ICMRS life time members signed in to be mentors. Education Committee led by Chair Dr. Herb Sun has been very active in organizing various workshops for members, including the one on career development in the membership meeting, and one more is being planned on Advances in Multidisciplinary Basic and Clinical Research on Spinal Disorders in October this year. The China Development Committee, chaired by Dr. Bin Li, has expanded three new China Collaborative Centers in this year. For a more detailed report slides, please click here.

As a tradition, the membership meeting was highlighted by the Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards. The winners in this meeting are Wanqing Xie from Rush University, Min Jin from Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry, and Yanzhi Liu from University of Nebraska Medical Center and Guangdong Medical University. The three awardees were presented with an award plaque, and a cash prize of $500 each.

Opening Ceremony of Shanghai Bone Tumor Institute - ICMRS Collaborating Center for Bone Tumor Research, May 13, 2016

Recently, the Shanghai Bone Tumor Institute (SBTI) was approved as a collaborating center by ICMRS and on May 13, 2016, the SBTI-ICMRS Collaborating Center for Bone Tumor Research was officially established in Shanghai. Dr. James Wang, ICMRS President, Dr. Tingting Tang, ICMRS President-Elect, and Dr. Bin Li, Chair of China Development Committee, were present at the ceremony. Dr. Wang delivered an opening remark.

Briefly, on behalf of ICMRS, Dr. Wang expressed his pride and honor in establishing the SBTI-ICMRS Collaborative Research Center. He commended the SBTI leadership for putting together a successful center application, and appreciated their interest in working with ICMRS to promote bone tumor research. Dr. Wang reiterated that ICMRS will do its part in helping SBTI in preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals with high impact, in preparing grant applications and also explore joint grant application options. He assured that ICMRS will also support local educational activities, such as workshops and conferences, and provide platforms to train center staff members in ICMRS member institutions overseas.

SBTI was founded in 2013 and is directed by Dr. Zhendong Cai. SBTI is a relatively young institution and aims to develop a strong research program in bone cancer biomarker, genome sequencing and related areas. It is anticipated that building on the strong ties with ICMRS, the SBTI-ICMRS Collaborating Center will soon grow into a leading center in clinical and basic research in bone tumor in China.

To date, there are 21 Centers collaborating with ICMRS at China.

ICMRS Distinguished Service Award

This annual distinguished service award is dedicated to recognizing and honoring an individual who has made lasting significant contributions to the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS).

Award application and selection procedures:

The Award Nomination Committee, consisting of ICMRS Executive Committee Members, nominates individuals for the Award. Dr. Yi-Xian Qin serves as the Chair of the Nomination Committee.
Nominees must be ICMRS members in good standing.
Nominees should submit the application form, curriculum vitae, resume or a short bio, and up to 3 letter(s) of support.
The Awards Committee, consisting of previous awardees, past Presidents and Board of DirectorsChairs, will critically evaluate the applicant’ records and submit a ranked order list of top nominees to the ICMRS Executive Committee, who will decide the semi-finalists. The President and the Board of Directors Chair will select the awardees.

The award will be in the form of a plaque.

News Report of 2016 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting at Orlando

The 2016 annual ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting was held at Orlando on March 5^th, 2016. More than 120 ICMRS members and invited guests attended the meeting. After a special dinner and socializing event, the meeting was kick started with welcome remarks by Dr. Tingting Tang, Chair of Program Committee and President-Elect. This was followed by a speech from the President, Dr. James Wang. He detailed the latest developments in ICMRS, especially the transformation of ICMRS to a paid-membership society. Dr. Linda J. Sandell, from the Washington University in St. Louis, and the current Editor in Chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, then delivered the keynote address entitled “Genetics of Cartilage Repair and Osteoarthritis”.

A major event in the meeting was the announcement of three winners of the Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards. Shao-wei Wang from the Medical School of Brown University, Huan-xiong Chen from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Wei Tong from University of Pennsylvania each received an award plaque and a $300 check. The award ceremony was followed by an introduction to ICOBR, 2016 by Dr. Yi-xian Qin, an ICMRS Board of Director, and an introduction to the Journal of Orthopaedic Translation by Dr. Lin Qin, the Chief Editor of this journal. The President of CORS, Dr. Zhuo-jing Luo, an invited attendee of this meeting introduced the 2016 ICORS meeting in Xian.

Dr. Linda Sandell is the Mildred B. Simon Professor and Co-Director to the Center for Musculoskeletal Research at Washington University in St. Louis. She has been a leader in the field of orthopaedic research, pioneering the use of molecular biologic techniques, protein biochemistry, large screening technologies, microscopy and computational biology to study cell responses to cartilage cell injury and the regulation of gene expression in connective tissues.

Dr. Sandell received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Denver University, her Ph.D. in biochemistry at Northwestern University, and postdoctoral work in molecular biology at the University of Chicago. Dr. Sandell was a faculty member at Rush Medical College in Chicago from 1982 to 1987, and at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1987 to 1997 when she moved to Washington University. Dr. Sandell has authored more than 200 publications, in addition to three books and seven patents. She has provided extensive leadership in the orthopaedic research field having chaired three Gordon Conferences and numerous other conferences including co-founding the Cartilage Gordon Conference. She has been President of the Orthopaedic Research Society (2000), the Histochemical Society (2005-2007) and the Society for Matrix Biology (2006-2008). In 2010, she received the Women’s Leadership Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society and, in 2015,the Alfred E. Shands, MD. Award from the ORS. She is Past President of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (2010- 2013).

2016 ICMRS-ORS MEMBERSHIP MEETING

March 5^th, 2016, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Orlando

Description

The International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society (ICMRS) will hold its 2016 ICMRS-ORS Membership Meeting on Saturday, March 5^th, 2016at Orlando. The meeting is organized to provide a forum for ICMRS members to exchange the information in frontiers of all musculoskeletal research, to bridge the knowledge gap between the scholars from different research fields, to promote young investigators in the field for successful career developments, and to share the successful experience in career development by senior researchers. To recognize the achievement of young ICMRS members, three Webster Jee Young Investigator Awards will be given at the meeting. The winners will be announced during the membership meeting and each awardee will receive an award certificate/plaque and a $300 check. All applicants are asked to attend the meeting because the award will only be given to the recipients who attend. Applicants may find details about ICMRS at http://www.icmrs.net. The program of 2016 ICMRS-ASBMR Membership Meeting will be announced soon.

Eligibility

1) Current ICMRS member (for registration: http://www.icmrs.net/user/register)

2) First author of accepted ORS abstract for 2016 annual meeting

3) Current graduate and/or medical student; Post-doc or equivalent; Junior faculty and professionals who received PhD or MD in less than 5 years

4) Has not received the award previously

5) Applicants are not required to be Chinese heritage

Selection

The accepted ICMRS abstract in both blind and un-blind formats should be submitted to the following e-mail address: icmrs.net@gmail.com no later than January 25 (Monday), 2016. The attached documents should be smaller than 10 MB. All submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed in blind by a review panel appointed by the ICMRS Program Committee. The top scored abstracts will be selected as the winners. As a general rule, no more than one award will be given to the applicants from the same research laboratory/group.
